An old adage in golf is that you never want to leave yourself “short,’’ whether it’s on an approach shot or a putt. But “short’’ is proving to be a positive these day when it comes to creating golf courses that are alternatives to traditional 18-hole layouts. These short courses – and par 3 courses – give the lie to the belief that golf takes too long to play and are opportunities for everyone from scratch players to entire families to enjoy the game.
Here’s a look at some of the top short and par 3 courses in the U.S.
Branson, Missouri: A Jack Nicklaus Signature Course that sits above Table Rock Lake, Top of the Rock is developer Johnny Morris’ tribute to the Ozarks heritage of Southern Missouri. In addition to the golf course, which plays from 1,470 yards from the tips down to 945 yards, Top of the Rock has an Arnold Palm-er-designed Practice Facility, and Arnie’s Barn — a 150-year-old barn relocated from Palmer’s backyard in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, complete with photos and memorabilia from The King’s career. Don’t miss the Sunset Ceremony that features a bagpiper and a Civil War cannon, the latter of which is fired exactly at sunset.
