Okay, so youve missed the green by a few feet and are left with a
fluffy, unpredictable lie. Situations like this arent uncommon here at
Poipu Bay in Kauai (and probably your home course too), but with a
quick pointer on greenside chipping, I think I can help you get up and
down more often than not from this tricky position. How? With the most
versatile and forgiving club in your bag.

Many players tell me that theyre trying to load their right side or
get to their right side in the backswing, but in almost all cases,
that player is sliding back instead of turning.

How to find your flaw and fix it right away
|
|
By Barry Goldstein with Ryan M. Noll, Photography by Warren Keating
|
|
There are countless possible flaws in the golf swing that can lead to
an endless variety of bad shots. However, in my 14 years of teaching
golf, there are a few recurring swing flaws that afflict both amateurs
and touring professionals alike. These flaws lead to a series of
negative chain reactions during the swing and eventually wreak havoc on
ones ability to make a repetitive and powerful golf swing.

Golf is a game of circles, right? The ball is round, the cup is round, the golf swing is somewhat round. So whats all this business about having a straight spine angle? How does that have anything to do with making successful contact?

Weve all experienced this one time or another. Midway through the
round, after hitting what seems to be a decent number of fairways, the
ball starts to slice. And not only does the ball begin creeping to the
right, the slice becomes more and more pronounced with each swing. This
then causes the body to tense up and limit the needed rotation of the
hands through the impact zone. Now thats an awful thought, isnt it?

Add yards with our long drive secrets

By 13 of the longest hitters in the world, Photography by Warren Keating

So you think youre a big hitter? Well, consider this. Todays top long
drivers dont bunt the ball a measly 250 yards off the tee. Heck, a
mediocre wallop drops somewhere around the 320-yard range. Frankly,
these guys arent satisfied with anything under 400 yards when it comes
time to winning a paycheck. Now thats long! |

Sometimes it just doesnt matter if you have great posture, a perfect spine angle and even a steady head position. As long as youre standing
too far away from the ball, youre going to have a devil of a time hitting consistent golf shots. In fact, most students Ive taught tend to stand too far away from the ball for reasons that make sense, such as a fear of shanking the ball off the hosel or hitting a fat shot.

Master golf's most difficult bunker shots
|
|
By Jeff Ritter, PGA; with Charlie Schroeder
|
|
If only we could tee up every golf shot. Wed always have perfect lies,
where no grass or trees or sand could get in the way of making clean
contact with the ball. Of course, that isnt the case. Between the tee
and green, we have to surrender to the course and play the ball as it
lies. That means adjusting to a number of challenging circumstances,
such as plugged bunker shots and awkward stances. For this story, Ive
concentrated my efforts on just those types of liesthe ones you get
where you look to your playing partners, throw your arms in the air and
say anybody have any suggestions? Take time to practice these shots,
and you wont wonder what to do the next time youre faced with an
awkward lie.
