All of us who love the game of golf have, at least once in our lives,
dreamed of playing at the highest level against the pros. Of course,
its a dream that very few get to actually live out, but its also a
dream that drives us all to try and improve. In reality, golf is one of
the few sports that actually allows amateur participants to use the
same tools and play on the same tracks as the worlds best, and as a
result, we all probably feel more kinship with the elite than
enthusiasts in other disciplines. Even neophyte players have brushes
with greatness when they strike one solid iron shot or hole a long
putt, an experience that tends to get them hooked on the game for good.
If youve ever been humbled after having your stroke analyzed at one of
those high-tech putting studios, you know why the adage feel is not
real is, well, real. After all, when examined under a microscope, all
the flaws of your stroke are magnified. Your path goes left, your
clubface is open, you hit everything off the toethe data doesnt lie
and sometimes all that bad news is enough to make you want to impale
your flatstick into the monitor. Whats important to keep in mind,
however, is that our strokes demand specific kinds of putters. Whether
its mallet, blade, movable weights or specific inserts, theres a
putter for you.
High MOI
Drivers arent the only clubs incorporating high MOI in their designs.
A number of putters, like the Odyssey White Hot XG, place the weight
deep and low to promote a truer roll. Also, its unique and light
textured-weave insert helps move weight away from the face.
Heeding their famous teaching advisors words, the engineers in
TaylorMades R&D department set out to design the ultimate fitting
system that would not only properly fit golfers for a full set of
clubs, but also allow them to try the actual clubs before making a
purchase. They accomplished this task by analyzing six years worth of
data from the companys MATT (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade)
System, which focused on launch conditions and their significance.
When poet William Cowper coined the phrase Variety is the spice of life, he obviously had putters in mind. Unlike every other club in the bag, which generally follow similar shape and size guidelines, putters are unquestionably the most unusual. Ranging from big to small, blade to mallet, light to heavy, cast to milled and so on, todays putters are anything but run-of-the-mill. Exciting advancements in metallurgy, polymers and weight science have enabled putter designers to push the envelope of MOI, skid reduction and feel to achieve a new breed of putters designed to accommodate the needs of all golfers. And if you find that they dont, a few models give you the freedom to self-adjust a putter to meet your own criteria.
