moveable weights? If your answer is “all of the above,” then you’re in
luck.
PING golf clubs have always been closely associated with technology and
advanced engineering, which isn’t surprising, considering the long
tradition the company has of creating products that adhere to the “form
follows function” philosophy.
Long known as the golf bag’s unsung heroes, irons have come full
circle. No longer are there just a few options between forged blades
and cast cavity-backs. Instead, there are numerous new models that
feature varying degrees of exciting new technologies designed to help
virtually all kinds of golfers.
Think maybe somebody down in Huntington Beach is a USC Trojan fan?
Perhaps, but the college football stalwart USC has nothing to do with a
pair of the newest, most innovative irons to come from Cleveland Golf’s
HQ. Called the CG RED ($699) and CG GOLD irons ($599), these two models
are loaded with a host of next-generation technologies designed to
accommodate virtually any type of player.
Iron design has been evolving since the earliest days of golf. Though
crude and often unwieldy, the first primitive tools quickly proved to
be indispensable in situations where accuracy was the primary goal. In
the modern era, the iron has become the staple of the set, and
accordingly, iron designs are now better than ever. Of course,
muscleback blades are still around for the most accomplished players,
with some that actually incorporate advanced technologies to make them
more player-friendly than your father’s VIPs or Goosenecks.
Game-improvement designs, which now dominate the iron market, feature
multi-material, perimeter-weighted designs that allow all types of
players to hit towering approach shots from all types of lies. And
what’s left in between? Combo sets, which meld the best of shotmaking
in short irons, and extreme forgiveness in the shape of a hybrid as a
long-iron replacement. So you ask, have we come a long way since the
early days of raw iron and hickory shafts? You bet we have.
Heeding their famous teaching advisor’s words, the engineers in
TaylorMade’s R&D department set out to design the ultimate fitting
system that would not only properly fit golfers for a full set of
clubs, but also allow them to try the actual clubs before making a
purchase. They accomplished this task by analyzing six years worth of
data from the company’s MATT (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade)
System, which focused on launch conditions and their significance.
The well-worn cliché “drive for show, putt for dough” is familiar to
most golfers, but heeded by few. Hitting big drives is, in fact, often
the most desirable accomplishment in the game for many recreational
players, most of whom are less concerned with score than the bragging
rights that accompany a long drive. Players who are interested in
shooting good scores, however, know that accurate driving, or
strategically positioning the ball off the tee, is a critical part of
playing solid golf, and sometimes mandates the use of different clubs.
The majority of recreational golfers fail to achieve the balance needed
to excel at golf or any athletic activity. One of the reasons why most
golfers don’t swing in balance is that they swing too hard. A rule I
like to impose on my students is “Swing as hard as you want to as long
as you finish the swing in balance.”
