By now, you’ve probably realized that hybrid clubs are a lot easier to
hit than traditionally shaped long irons. The ball flies higher and
lands softer with a hybrid, making them ideal for shots deep in the
fairway that require a soft landing on the green. But what you may not
know is hybrid clubs are also designed to perform well from a variety
of other locations on the golf course. From the rough, the fringe, even
the bunker—the hybrid can be an effective tool for saving your score.
MacGregor Golf is one of the oldest and most storied golf club
manufacturers in the world. Over the years, the company has been
closely associated with many of the game’s all-time greats, including
Jack Nicklaus, who won numerous major championships using MacGregor VIP
irons and persimmon woods. Over the years, MacGregor has changed hands
on several occasions and produced a wide variety of clubs with varying
degrees of success.
Heeding their famous teaching advisor’s words, the engineers in
TaylorMade’s R&D department set out to design the ultimate fitting
system that would not only properly fit golfers for a full set of
clubs, but also allow them to try the actual clubs before making a
purchase. They accomplished this task by analyzing six years worth of
data from the company’s MATT (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade)
System, which focused on launch conditions and their significance.
The well-worn cliché “drive for show, putt for dough” is familiar to
most golfers, but heeded by few. Hitting big drives is, in fact, often
the most desirable accomplishment in the game for many recreational
players, most of whom are less concerned with score than the bragging
rights that accompany a long drive. Players who are interested in
shooting good scores, however, know that accurate driving, or
strategically positioning the ball off the tee, is a critical part of
playing solid golf, and sometimes mandates the use of different clubs.
The driver is the star of the golf club world, and as such, gets
seemingly all the attention, all the kudos and all the technological
advancements. As a result, for a lot of golfers fairway woods have
become nothing more than afterthoughts that are needed simply to fill
out their collection of clubs. This approach is a definite mistake, and
one that should be immediately exchanged for one that views fairway
clubs as critical members of every golfer’s arsenal.
If you’re supposed to hit down on the ball with your irons and slightly
up on the ball with your woods, what in the world do you do with a
hybrid club?David Glod, president of Tour Edge Golf, says that the key to swinging a hybrid correctly is to look at what club(s) the hybrid has replaced. “Because most hybrids are designed to be iron replacements, we advise golfers to swing them like they would their middle irons.”
As such, remember that it’s not necessary to try and scoop the ball upward (as many feel they have to do with low-lofted irons). Instead, allow the low and deep CG to work its magic and launch the ball at a high and optimal angle. The trick? Don’t be afraid to swing down and through as you would with a mid- or long iron.
